Summary
"The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) is a research, policy, and advocacy organization representing 235 public research universities, land-grant institutions, state university systems, and affiliated organizations. Founded in 1887, APLU is North America's oldest higher education association with member institutions in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, four U.S. territories, Canada, and Mexico. Annually, APLU member campuses enroll 4.7 million undergraduates and 1.3 million graduate students, award 1.2 million degrees, employ 1.2 million faculty and staff, and conduct $42.7 billion in university-based research. The Congressional and Governmental Affairs (CGA) office of APLU is focused on representing university interests before Congress and the Executive Branch on many of today’s cutting edge issues. Topics range from student financial aid and scientific research, to tax policy and appropriations, to energy policy and international development. Interns will work with the Congressional and Governmental Affairs staff to promote the association’s agenda before the federal government. APLU CGA interns will witness and contribute to the policy-making and advocacy processes in areas of public policy critical to the public higher education enterprise. Interns will participate in a number of activities, such as attending and reporting on Congressional hearings and federal agency briefings, carrying out research projects, interacting with other members of the higher education community, and other projects and efforts as necessary. An APLU internship is first and foremost a unique educational experience for students considering a career in higher education or public policy. We particularly encourage student applicants who are seeking internships as part of a formal academic program at their school. In all instances, we work with our interns to make the experience as relevant to the students’ educational goals and career aspirations as possible. The APLU CGA internship is a great opportunity for students with an interest in politics and the political process, and especially for those interested in higher education and/or science or technology policy. Students with a wide variety of majors have benefitted from this internship. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome. The internship would be based in the APLU office in Washington, DC. The internship is unpaid; however we provide a transit subsidy to help cover Metrorail/bus commuting expenses to and from the office. APLU typically accepts applications for Fall, Spring, and Summer interns. Applications are due one to two months prior to the internship start date. To apply, submit a cover letter explaining your interest in the position and your availability, along with your resume to cgainternship@aplu.org."
